Topic: Crowd Funding legalities

Hey guys, been fairly quiet on my front for a while, but I've been busy with a ton of projects, one of which I want to talk to you about today.

I'm currently in pre-production on a Judge Dredd fan film, a short which is kind of going to put all of my filmmaking and sfx knowledge to the test.

The costs of this film are quickly starting to add up and I've been thinking about using a crowd funding site to assemble a fairly meager budget, something small, but that will obviously go a long way.

The thing I'm not sure about though, is the legality of getting people to invest in something that I don't own the intellectual property of. I know the issue of 'fan films' is a grey area anyway so I'd rather not take any unnecessary risks if need be.

Just thought you guys might have any advice!

Re: Crowd Funding legalities

Wayside creations crowdsourced their Fallout Fan Web series. Have a look at how they approached it and it should help you out. But I think it was essentially them saying outright they didn't own any of the rights and asking politely not to be sued...
